It’s been a long year…

Dec 17 is the 1-year anniversary of breaking my leg while skiing. Yesterday i had surgery to get the hardware out and do arthroscopy to see how it had healed and what needed fixing. Surgeon said the ACL is torn but intact so he let it be (per my request since I couldn’t mentally handle another long recovery right now). The meniscus and cartilage look ok (as in they’re good enough for how serious the fracture was). There was a lot of inflammation, probably from the hardware irritating the synovial lining. Some people just have a bad reaction to metal inside the body, but there may have been something going on physically that was causing internal brusing and irritation to the knee capsule (?). Lastly, there was an overgrowth of bone where the main fracture started – at the top and center of the tibia – which is also where ACL attaches. He shaved that bump down a bit trying not to touch the ACL itself. That bone bump is in the location where i’ve been feeling the pain when loading the knee — walking down hills and stairs — so hopefully he shaved enough off to reduce that pain. For the next few weeks I’ll be taking it easy, healing the incisions and the inflammation from surgery. If all goes well i’ll be back riding a bike and making frames in the next couple of weeks! Looking forward to a better 2023…
