A big storm is headed our way finally so I headed out to get as high as I could on FH road as well as explore a couple new roads I’ve been meaning to for awhile. The only cars I saw was the Placer County road crew cleaning the road of rockfall and dirt that had washed over the winter. Made it up to Canada Hill when the road was too snowy to ride the cross bike on (i tried), so turned around and dove down a dirt road at Ford Point and hooked onto American Hill road in the heart of last summer’s American Fire. It is scorched earth down there. Most of the area is black with no surviving trees, it’s crazy. There definitely are some green patches every so often mostly in the drainages. But as you can see from the photos, it’s going to take a long long time to recover any kind of similarity to what it once looked like.
Being on this bike is so much damn fun, you can go fast on road and it makes any dirt road or trail somewhat technical. This is the allure of the Gravel Bike, All-rounder, or whatever you choose to call it. I think I’ll call mine a Mountain Cross since it seems to fit what I do with it.
